Supermarket flowers

Choreographed by the year 13 dance class

'Supermarket flowers' by Ed Sheeran Lyrics

I took the supermarket flowers from the windowsill
I threw the day old tea from the cup
Packed up the photo album Matthew had made
Memories of a life that's been loved
Took the get well soon cards and stuffed animals
Poured the old ginger beer down the sink
Dad always told me, "don't you cry when you're down"
But mum, there's a tear every time that I blink
Oh I'm in pieces, it's tearing me up, but I know
A heart that's broke is a heart that's been loved
So I'll sing Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
When I fell down you'd be there holding me up
Spread your wings as you go
And when God takes you back we'll say Hallelujah
You're home
I fluffed the pillows, made the beds, stacked the chairs up
Folded your nightgowns neatly in a case
John says he'd drive then put his hand on my cheek
And wiped a tear from the side of my face
I hope that I see the world as you did cause I know
A life with love is a life that's been lived
So I'll sing Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
When I fell down you'd be there holding me up
Spread your wings as you go
And when God takes you back we'll say Hallelujah
You're home
Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
You got to see the person that I have become
Spread your wing
And I know that when God took you back he said Hallelujah
You're home

The supermarket flowers by Ed Sheeran is a song about his grandmother. His grandmother was very ill and passed away while he was in the process of making the divide album. Ed sheeran was not originally going to include this song in the divide album but after the funeral his grandfather suggested that he should put this song in the album. The song is about loss and heartbreak but at the same time love and happiness. Ed wrote this song in memory of his grandmother and the life that she live and the love that she shared.

I can related to the lyrics of this song in many ways. In 2014 my nextdoor neighbor passed away, she was like a grandmother to me. I would go visit her almost everyday after school and she would give me a glass of juice and a biscuit. This song reminds me of the happy life that she had and the people the shared it with.

From the lyrics in the song and the meaning behind them, my classmates and I created a lyrical duo dances. While we were creating and choreographing the dance we were thinking about a loved one that we have lost and how we could portray this emotion and feeling into the dance. Doing this really helped us understand and perform the dance better by really using these emotions and feelings.

We have a lot of movements and ideas in our dance that help us shows these feelings and can tell a story. Relationship played a big part in the dance and can be easily shown through the partner sections. While we are dancing the partner sections we really thought about the loved one that we had lost and the relationship that we had with them. Throughout the dance we show lost and love through the movements and emotions to help portray the lyrics and meaning in the song and to create a lyrical dance.
