My choreography is based on a quote. “The secret to happiness is freedom and the secret to freedom is courage.”
The intention of this dance is to show the feeling of happiness, freedom and courage from the quote and interbreed these feelings, thoughts and emotion into my choreography and create interesting and unique movements to tells/shows the spectators a story.
In this quote it talks about, to be happy you need freedom and to have freedom you need courage. I have unwrapped and interpreted this quote in my own way and gained an understanding of the meaning of the quote. In my dance I have tried to represent the meaning of the quote of having courage, freedom and happiness through my choreograph and music chose.
I wanted my choreography to tell a story through the movements and the song to make my dance more interesting and relatable. My dance is about someone(the dancer) being shy and reserved because she does not have confidence. She tries to break through being shy and reserved by being confident and open even though it is very hard for her and makes her worried and nervous. She realizes that she should just live life because everyone is the same and goes through the same struggles as she does and she should just let go and be courageous. Having courage has allowed her to be free and happy and has made her into a more joyful person.
My choreography has help portrayed the meaning and my interpretation and understanding of the quote. For my starting position I am in a hunched over sitting down position facing the back. This starting position represents being scared and not having courage. At the start of my dance I do sharp strong movement which shows I am trying to be courageous but I still scared and shy. For this first section of the dance I am on the floor showing that I am of being reserved. Throughout the dance the music become more upbeat my dance movements and emotion resemble becoming more courageous as the dance does on and therefore a feeling of being free and happy. In the dance when I am feeling more courageous and happy, I have choreographed big and more energetic movements to show the emotion of being happy and free, being ‘over the moon.’ my ending position to my dance it quite different to my starting position on being hunched over on the ground and scared to my ending position of being strong, free and happy this shows the growth of the dancer throughout the dance of the gaining of courage, happiness and freedom.
The song I have chosen to choreograph my dance to also really supports my quotes and fits the meaning behind it. The song I have chosen is ‘Midnight Moon’ by Oh Wonder. This song is talking about having courage and being happy because now you have freedom. A main section of words repeated throughout the song is, “we’re over the moon,” which is talking about being happy and courageous and feeling free which is what my quotes talks about.
You with the wide eyes, don't lose your courage, courage
You swing your head high and don't be worried, worried
Your heart's in a free ride, feel it beating, beating
Caught in the headlights, climb to the ceiling, ceiling
At the start of the song they talk about being “wide-eyed” which is typically synonymous with “courageous.” they are saying not to lose this unique and valuable trait and to instead stay confident, live in the moment, and be ambitious. “You swing your head high” is also talking about having courage and “don’t be worried worried.” “Climb to the ceiling” likely means to shoot for the stars and aim high.
We're all animals out in the dark
Got a feeling that we're all believing in
Not waiting for daylight to start
We're over the moon, over the midnight moon
It is saying we are all animals living on this planet with a different sense of reality and perceptions but go through the same struggles. “feeling that we’re all believing in” is raw motivation, “over the moon” puts us in a great state of happiness, and not wait for anything, not even daylight.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Over the moon, over the midnight moon
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Over the moon, over the midnight moon
We're over the moon, over the midnight moon
This it the chorus and is talking about being happy and joyful by being “over the moon.”
You with the sad smile, don't lose your courage, courage
Dance in the high tide and don't be worried, worried
Your soul's in a wild fire, feel it beating, beating, b-beating
Dreams on a gold wire, won't you believe it, believe it?
In this verse it talks about, Instead of being Wide-eyed, this person is sad. They are saying no matter who you are stay courageous, confident and happy. “Dreams on a gold wire” could be talking about aiming for something and believing in yourself which with give you freedom.
We're all animals out in the dark
Got a feeling that we're all believing in
Not waiting for daylight to start
We're over the moon, over the midnight moon
Live life, we are all the same, don’t worried about what other people might say.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Over the moon, over the midnight moon
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Over the moon, over the midnight moon
We're over the moon, over the midnight moon
This part of the song is quite upbeat and is sung very joyfully and puts you in a good mood. It again talks about being “over the moon” and having courage, being free and happy.
